Big Straw Rice Bag!! ~ Secret of Kumamoto~






I introduce about "Ohdawara Festival" in Tamana. Ohdawara means big straw rice bag. This is a very historical event in Tamana. Reason why I choose this event, I want to tell this event more.

This is a type of festival that is not well-known in Kumamoto. This festival is annual autumn festival. It started from 1997. People roll or pull a big straw rice bag. It is so heavy. Big straw rice used this event weighs about 800 kilogram. And it has a diameter of about 2.5 meters. It is 4 meters wide. While people pull big straw rice bag, they run 80 meters. But, it is funny event. They compete with other group, which is faster. One group has 14 people. When they do this event, they put on special uniform. This festival is regardless age or sex.

When I was a high school student, I went to Tamana high school. In my high school, we rolled a big straw at school festival. It is so funny. When we do this event in our school, we use small straw rice bag. And when I was a high school student, I take part in this event. And our group is only girls. But, we got a prize. I think I could a valuable experience.

There are some festivals and events in Tamana. For example, there is a festival called "Sho-bu Festival" in June. Sho-bu is a sweet flag. We can see a lot of beautiful flowers at riverside. Moreover, there is a displayed of fireworks on a summer evening in August. Fireworks are display about 1000 in there. It is very beautiful and powerful.

There are many events and famous things in Tamana. We can enjoy all year round. So, I like Tamana. Please come on and look this event! Let’s pull a big straw rice bag!
